The Local Heroes Project - Researching Together
Listening to the stories that their Local Heroes had to tell, gave the students plenty of ideas for topics that they wished to research. For example, one group were interested in how money had changed and what it was worth. They were fascinated to discover how much people used to get paid and together they collected a set of pre-decimal money.
Another group discovered that their hero used to be a shorthand typist. They had never heard of this skill themselves and wanted to learn it themselves.
Other groups found out that their local Hero really use to admire Ginger Rogers, a film star in the 1940's. They researched to find out about her but they also discovered that there used to be a cinema in ballymahon. There is not one there now.
